Outdoor Learning & Shade

One of the district’s most attractive attributes on elementary campuses is the old growth trees and pastoral and expansive turf and play areas. Areas between classroom buildings are currently filled with turf. While attractive, these spaces could be re-imagined to support more outdoor learning and collaboration in line with current educational trends. Development of these spaces into outdoor learning also provides the district with increased outdoor educational redundancy in light the recent COVID pandemic. Common proposed master plan features include development of these spaces with outdoor learning. In many campuses, an outdoor “academic lawn” is proposed to allow for larger campus gathering. Designs for these spaces could include gentle amphitheater spaces or general use socialization and gathering spaces.
